Cardio used to be a king in the fitness world.

And for most of us, cardio associates with boredom.

I literally HATED doing cardio back in the days when I was starting off at the gym.

However, it was not that long ago until researchers found that there are greater fitness and health gains instead of doing steady-state cardio sweat sessions.

In fact, nowadays we all know that there’s no need to spend hours on a cardio machine to lose weight.

With the right plan, you can get your heart rate up and lose weight, without having to run an excessive distance or spend an afternoon in the cardio section.

And don’t get me wrong, I love running and am a runner myself.
It has amazing benefits, but I’m really not doing it for the benefits as much as I love to run (my weird reasons probably).

However, I don’t always have the time and the opportunity to go for a run.

So, for those of you that share my vibe, or are doing cardio just for the sake of losing weight, I’ll show you that you don’t really have to do it.

It is possible to skip the boring cardio, and have even better weight loss results, and today I’m going to show you how.

Let’s get started right away!

Why you don’t need cardio to lose weight?

When you think of exercise geared specifically toward weight loss, you likely imagine spending long hours on the treadmill or elliptical.

And while it’s true that doing steady state cardio probably will help with weight loss, it’s actually totally unnecessary if your main goal is fat loss.

I’m not saying that you should never do cardio.
You just don’t need dedicated cardio sessions.

Cardio is actually one of the least effective fitness modalities for weight loss.

In fact, you can achieve that in many different ways that are not as boring and are a lot more effective.

We’re heading to them right now.

Strength training

Since weight loss is all about burning more calories, the first thing I can think of that will give you twice of a burn is strength training.

Strength training changes your body composition the way cardio never will.

This is because building more muscle spikes your metabolism and helps you burn more calories.

The more calories your body burns on its own, the easier it is to lose weight.

In other words, if you want to lose weight, building muscle is a good thing.

Especially strength training done with intervals and circuits – that’s hitting two birds with one stone.

We’ll head on to that right now…

HIIT

High-Intensity Interval Training aka HIIT is a training technique in which you give all-out, 100% effort, through quick, explosive and intense bursts of exercise, followed by extra short and active recovery periods.

This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and in the fat-burning zone which is why it’s proven to burn more fat in less amount of time.

HIIT is so effective because of a whole lot of reasons…

  • The training sessions are short
  • You burn more fat
  • You tap into the burning zone faster
  • It got an afterburn effect
  • It’s fun and diverse (never boring)
  • Doesn’t burn muscle mass
  • Give you fast results

The magic of HIIT is in the intervals and circuits, that keep you in the fat-burning zone, even hours after finishing the workout.

It’s also in diversity. HIIT training sessions are designed with tons of different bodyweight movements that spike your heart rate up to the ceiling in just a few reps.

After long years of a gym workout, doing mostly weightlifting split training that lasts for hours and boring cardio on a machine that feels like an eternity, I realized that I’ve been wasting precious time on something that’s not that effective.

Oh, the countless times I’ve left the gym after an hour and a half of workout, without even breaking a serious sweat and without feeling like I’ve reached my maximum…

Not to mention cardio, which when done on a cardio machine, takes at least 15 minutes just to possibly enter the fat-burning zone, and not to mention burning fat.

Well, that’s not the case with HIIT.

HIIT is designed to push you to the limits and give you the maximum amount of benefits in a shorter period of time.

Quality HIIT training sessions are approximately 30 minutes a day, warm-up included, which is amazing for anyone with a busy schedule.

Yes it is hard, yes it pushes you far away out of your comfort zone and yes you think you’re going to die.

But that’s exactly what it takes to make a real change.

It’s not boring, nor to you nor to your body.

Plus, even though it’s a high-intensity cardiovascular activity, HIIT helps you burn fat without burning lean muscles, which is the case with the regular long-lasting cardio session.
