Workout Motivation Tricks – How To Motivate Yourself – Monica May
Working out and eating healthy is the key to staying fit and living a healthy life.
However, it’s really hard to stay motivated especially when it comes to working out.
There are many excuses we all use when it comes to working out:
- “I’m too tired”
- “I don’t have the time”
- “I’m not in the mood today”
- “I will do it tomorrow”
We’ve all been there, right?
These are not really a reason to skip a workout, yet we all use them as an excuse to take a break.
Well, the truth is, motivation is the key to success.
If you are motivated enough you’ll do it, if not you’ll find an excuse.
And that’s exactly what we’re doing today!
These workout motivation tricks will help you keep going and complete that workout even when you don’t feel like it.
Check to stay in the workout mood – they actually work!
Write Down Your Goals
Just ask yourself one simple question: Why are you doing this?!
Is it because you want to look good?
Or is it because you want to finally take that step towards a healthier self?
Why is this journey so important to you?
Why you have to keep going, even if you don’t feel like it?
Make sure to focus on two separate things:
- Your short term goals
- Your long term goals
While the short term goals may be as simple as ‘I want to fit in my dress for this wedding I’m on’, or ‘I want to look good at the beach this summer’, the long term goals are usually way deeper.
When it comes to long term goals, I’ll often write down:
- I want to stop giving up, and stay determined to what’s important to me,
- I want to be able to look back one day and say I enjoyed my life and made the most out of it,
- I want to start feeling healthy and comfortable in my own body.
I write these goals down in my Fit Babe Fitness Planner to remind myself each day how important my goals are to me.
This helps me maintain my healthy lifestyle day after day, no matter how lazy I am.
Workout Motivation Posters
The internet is full of them.
Workout motivational posters are the real deal for me.
They always help me get motivated and in a workout mood.
Also, you could print some of your favorite motivational posters, and put them somewhere in your room.
For example, you can hang them on your mirror, or you can put some as your desktop background.
Motivational posters work so good in boosting your motivation up and reminding you how important your goals actually are to you.
I do the same thing!
Since I found how important motivation posters are, I’ve done many collections myself, for all of you that need that extra push.

Track Your Results
The results are definitely one of the most inspiring things that can happen to you on a fitness journey.
Imagine you’ve worked hard for months, and you finally see the results.
Well, that’s the most exciting thing you can experience in the workout process.
That’s why tracking your results in super important to keep you motivated because they are the reward and the accomplishment of your hard work.
However, the results are not always visible, and that’s why you’ll have to make sure to keep a track on them.
In my article Tracking Weight Loss Progress – Why Is It Important & How To Do It Right I explain every detail about why it’s important and how to do it right.
Make sure to check it out.
Dress For Workout
If you look like someone who wants to workout you will act like someone who workout.
Workout clothing really puts you in the zone for sure.
If you go to the gym or work out at home in your regular clothes, you are much less likely to take your training seriously.
Wearing workout clothes in which you feel beautiful and confident, will increase your confidence and will make you that much more motivated.
I workout at home, so I really don’t have to put on a fancy workout set.
However, I never workout in an old baggy t-shirt.
I always put on a matching set of sports bra and leggings, even though I am working out alone in front of a mirror.
Believe me, how you look in front of yourself is what matters the most.
When you look like someone who works out, you will feel and act like somebody who works out!
So make sure you look like you’re in the workout mood when you go for a run, when you go to the gym, or when you work out at home.
Get Yourself A Workout Buddy
You definitely need a workout buddy!
Find someone that has the same goal as yours, or even better, convince your friends to start planning their “get on track” journey.
Rather, it is your friends, or your boyfriend, or a member of your family.
It’s just very important for your motivation level because support and motivation go together like salt and pepper.
Also if you’re surrounded with people who want to workout, you’re most likely to start living your own fitness life and never need an extra push to go to the gym.
This is actually why most of the people get a personal trainer because having support is one of the most important things in life.
Make Constant Changes
Bringing something new in every training is crucial.
And not only for the motivational reason, but for many other reasons too.
New exercises bring excitement and fun.
That being said, it is proven that including HIIT and plyometric moves into your training sessions can be a real motivation booster.
Also, changing out the exercises daily is crucial to keep the fun going on.
Boredom is one of the main reasons that many people fail to stick to a workout program. No matter how motivated or excited you are when you first start a new workout, it’s easy for those strong emotions to slowly fade away as the weeks and months of doing the same thing drag on.”
That’s why my workout program Burn Baby Burn has 28 Days of different workout intervals and over 100+ different exercises to make it fun and most important of all you will never get bored physically or mentally.
Before & After
The before and after photos are the biggest workout motivation of all.
The feeling, to see yourself in a new light and to see the changes you’ve made, well that’s priceless.
You will be proud of yourself and it will give you strength and motivation to keep going.
I hope I helped you get motivated, and stay motivated too.

Thank you for your article on how to be motivated! I’m a 52 years young woman and have been trying to keep in shape and healthy. In the las year I have changed my diet, not eating process foods, breads, sodas no fried foods no red meats (trying to cut all meats out of my diet). I eat more healthy, plenty of vegetables, salmon, chicken, water as my drink, almond milk. I go for 2 hrs. walk at least 3 times a week, workout at home with workout videos from YouTube, phone apps like SWORKIT, GWOD, Passion4profession and what I get from Pinterest. I was 215 last year which is the biggest I’ve ever been. Now I’m down 193 (not bad but still not my ideal weight) I’m only 5’6″. The issue is that even though I’m doing all this to keep healthy and I am feeling good in a way. I went for my physical, have hypertension, my cholesterol is high, my glucose is high (I have never had a high glucose or cholesterol). The dr. recommended I changed my diet and start exercising. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG! It really upset me that they tell me to exercise and changed my diet when I have been doing all of it. Instead of feeling happy about myself, I left the Drs. office feeling kind of depressed. Can you give me some advice on what I need to do to feel and look great inside and out!
From A Dissatisfied Customer!
I’m shocked! Really, I don’t know what to say. I’m not a doctor, so I really don’t know these stuff, but all I know is that you were doing everything right.
Did you talked to the doctor about this? Because, I really think that you should find a second opinion, because how can you know what you should eat when you eat healthy and you’re having problems with your health.
I wouldn’t know what to tell you, because again I’m not an expert, but all I know is that you should keep going!
Please let me know how you’re doing!
My guess is that she Annette may have a slow thyroid and that would make it difficult for her to lose weight even if she is doing everything right. Hypothyroidism is very hard to diagnose so seeing a doctor you can relate to and someone you can trust would be helpful. I’m “doing everything right” and still not losing weight. Just found out I have hypothyroid and I need to really focus on a healthy diet and healing my thyroid if I want to lose weight and have energy.
Hypothyroidism is so common these days, it really worries me.
I have at least 5 of my closest friends and family having problems with their thyroid these days.
And yes, hypothyroidism can be one of the reasons why you are not losing weight, but you can make it all better with the right foods you eat for sure.
A good and balanced nutrition plan is great choice when it comes to fighting any disease, and diet can only help you get better, never make it worse.
Not to mention exercising – it’s one of the best things you can do when it comes to having problems with the thyroid.
However, it’s hard to make it a routine when you’re constantly feeling tired :(
I’ll be more than happy to try and build a plan for all of you girls out there struggling with hypothyroidism.
And that’s exactly what I plan on writing next.
Hello Annette, I have struggled with weight issues for years and still do I try to eat healthy and try to exercise daily so I know your struggle. I’m no expert but did the Dr. take your glucose readings after you had fasted for 8 hours. If not that could be the glucose problem. I am a pharmacist and I strongly suggest keep doing what you’re doing. Check you glucose levels yourself at home and keep a record of them. Many things can make your sugar run high…eating, sickness etc. You are eating healthier and exercising…keep it up and the results will come…not overnight and probably not by the next Dr. appointment…but it will happen.
Hey thanks for the motivation! It certainly helped to get me motivated to start fresh on my workouts and morning run that ive been putting off all week lol. Im trying to tone EVERYTHING and results don’t happen overnight, so i NEED to stop giving up. Im 24ys old, 5’6 &165lbs…. My goal is 125lbs, with the motivation that you made in your blog will help me get there so thank you :)
I find your blog very inspiring. Thank you
Thank you Nina for this comment!
I really appreciate it!
I Love your blog, diary, and website, as well as Pinterest! Great comments, advice, motivation, blog, and photo’s.
I personally found you on Pinterest. I loved one particular photo of a woman who had a perfect bottom! I’m working to get myself back into PRE…three children, getting older, doing too much, have medical problems, life happens…excuses…excuses…excuses…:)
So … you’re site is VERY helpful!
I do have one complaint though.
Up above, you have a Before & After photo.
I may notice this more than the average consumer because I see this so often on fitness sites, and I’ve been a Professional Photographer for over 35 years (owning my own studio for 28). My specialty is making people look as good as they can, and the first thing most people say is “can you make me lose xx pounds”? And my answer is “yes, and I can do it WITH the camera”. Meaning, I do not even need to use an editing program.
So for the sake of a wonderful fitness site…
It is my opinion to try to use the same…in each photo:
1) Same Lighting: Cold light in photo 1 is harsh & casts “chunky” shadowing. Warm/natural light in photo 2 enhances “soft lengthening curves”.
2) Same Pose: In photo 1 model has arms down at sides causing poor posture & slumping. This causes belly bulging & back curvature. Her R/arm is also “just” meeting her back, which gives the “illusion” of a very thick trunk.
Model has R/elbow extended & hand on hip in photo 2, as well as L/arm raised all the way above shoulder, which causes the abs to lift & enhance, forcing good posture, in addition to stretching, lengthening, & thinning appearance of belly. The slightest deviation from pose can make a person look as though they have lost many dress sizes, or even undergone cosmetic surgery.
3) Same Background: The background is diff in each of the photos, although the same color, they are diff.
4) Same Photographer: #1 is taken by someone, so she is slumping. #2 is a selfie, forcing her to raise her hands w/out looking as posed.
5) Same “Bra” or strap length: Bra is tightened in photo 2 or is an entirely different bra, because it has lost at least 6″ off of the strap (though her breasts don’t appear to have changed in size, they are just being supported better. Losing weight and exercise will not enhance the fatty tissue of breasts. ONLY the muscular area of breasts. Hence why body builders and thin women have incredibly small breasts.
And because I do not think you have intentionally done this (because it appears you have tried to make the photos look similar, I believe). Also, generally the reason this is usually done is a sales technique. I will not name any names, however, one of the largest, and oldest companies who sell vitamins and many other things, uses this tactic, as well as a company that recently has become big online in trying to get people to believe that you can wrap yourself in their product and become “fit” & lose “fat”. (hope I don’t hurt any feelings if someone is selling or using any of these products) again JMHO and it’s only mine. ;)
So that’s my way more than 2 cents.
Thanks for your wonderful site.
But I digress
First of all, I’m so glad that you like my blog and find it inspiring!
It means a lot to hear that, so thank you for the follow :)
About the pictures, I agree 100%, I know that they are not stunning, but that are the only pictures I had from these girls.
They sent me the pictures I didn’t made them myself.
However, I can make a better after picture, but the before is something that cannot be retaken :(
Thank you for the advice, I will try to improve the before and after photos in he future!
All the best,
